While it’s yet to be seen if this is an elaborate stunt the uncovering of dumped Atari games sheds light on the importance of proper destruction of outdated products, prototypes, and even sensitive documents.
It was 1983 and console sales were declining. Atari were suffering huge losses and released what many will argue was the worst commercially released game ever made … ‘E.T. The Extra Terrestrial’. Urban legend reported 14 trucks were driven from a factory to the New Mexico desert to bury unsold Atari products as landfill. The actual dig which uncovered the find is part of an upcoming documentary that will be released by the newly formed Xbox Entertainment Studios.
