Governments around the world are actively seeking ways to address the growing problem of ewaste. ‘Electric Waste Orchestra’ does something a little different with electronic waste, they construct musical instruments out of old computers.
When asked why improvise music out of electronic waste? “It was something that I had for free,” Jackson says. “It’s something that I imagine a lot of people have for free — there’s stockpiles of these computer parts anywhere with an IT department, a community help desk. Or even people that went through a lot of computers themselves might have a stack of hard drives somewhere.”
There are many risks associated with giving away your computer equipment to these community projects. One gigabite of hard drive space can hold the same amount of sensitive information as 400 archive boxes. Unfortunately formatting doesn’t completely wipe the information stored on your hard drive.
