This week 27 privacy enforcement authorities are participating in the second Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN) Privacy Sweep.

Locally the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner will examine 50 of Australia’s most popular apps. They’ll be looking at the types of permissions an app is seeking and whether those permissions exceed what would be expected based on the app’s functionality. They will also look at how the app explains to consumers why it wants the information and what it will do with it.

Mobile apps are a focus of many privacy enforcement authorities due to the amount of personal information they collect and their explosion in popularity around the world. Budding developers and businesses with established Apps can review the OAIC’s Mobile Apps Developers Guide to implement better privacy practices.

A full report of the findings will be made public later in the year.

For nearly 15 years Shred-X Document Destruction has been the leader in secure destruction services. We assist organisations in complying with the Privacy Act 1988 and its Amendments providing tailored services to thousands of commercial sites and households across Australia.

In addition to destroying documents we also securely dispose of eWaste including mobile phones. Destruction is proven to be the only 100% secure way to destroy data from electronic devices permanently. That means physically shredding the device and disposing of the tiny particles that remain.
