The theme of this past week (as it should every week) is ‘Stay on top of your IT Security’.

In response to the discovery of the Bourne Again shell (BASH) vulnerability, the Privacy Commissioner has issued a warning to all businesses to not ignore your obligations or risk breaching the Privacy Act. The statement is directed primarily at System Administrators but consumers running OSX and Unix-based operating systems should also be aware of the need to update their devices regularly.

CBP Lawyers also published an article discussing Point-of-Sale (POS) systems and the ongoing threat of credit card fraud. “Smaller retailers may be unaware that they are an extremely attractive target for sophisticated gangs of cybercriminals.” POS systems in these smaller retailers are not often standalone machines. When the POS system has unrestricted access to the internet the threat of unauthorised access is increased.
